Greater Newark Health Care Coalition

The Greater Newark Health Care Coalition (GNHCC) began in 2008 as a vehicle for response to the closure of two Newark hospitals. It provided a conduit for information between hospital CEOs and the New Jersey Commissioner of Health. As the crisis abated, the participants determined that there was value in the continuation of an organization comprising high-level representatives of Newark area entities concerned with access to high-quality health care – and in particular, primary health care – in the greater Newark area. Over time, the organization grew to include high-level representatives of hospitals, primary health care, educational institutions, advocacy organizations, behavioral health organizations, visiting nurse organizations, and others. The New Jersey and Newark Health Departments are represented ex officio. Since its inception, GNHCC has undertaken diverse initiatives aimed at transforming healthcare and health outcomes for our region.

The vision of GNHCC is health equity for residents of the Greater Newark region. GNHCC’s mission is to work collaboratively to improve systems and community and individual conditions for optimal health and well-being.

In January of 2020, Governor Murphy designated GNHCC, along with sister coalitions in Camden, Trenton, and Paterson, as NJ’s first Regional Health Hubs (RHH). RHHs are envisioned as non-profit organizations dedicated to improving healthcare delivery and health outcomes, working in concert with consumers and stakeholders in the region.

Cover All Kids

“Cover All Kids NJ” ensures that all children in New Jersey have access to health insurance coverage. It is part of a broader effort to expand healthcare access and reduce the number of uninsured individuals, particularly among vulnerable populations like children, regardless of their immigration status.

Stay Covered NJ

“Stay Covered NJ” is an initiative of the NJ Department of Human Services to ensure that current Medicaid members remain covered under the NJFamilyCare Program. The focus is to ensure that residents of New Jersey currently enrolled in NJFamilyCare return their renewal packages to continue receiving health insurance benefits.
